Satranjis are traditionally made of cotton, jute and wool colored by vegetable dye. In these modern times shannel and chemical dye are also being used. Traditionally the women weavers are part of insular community, like the Muslin weaver. In these modern times they still come from families with a Satranji heritage.
Satranjis, the traditional rugs. This particular women weavers under threat from industrialization. Once a luxury at the Mughal court these rugs still survive against all odds. Now these highly textured and brightly colored rugs may reach anyone.
Satranjis can be of any size depending upon choice of the buyer. Traditionally designs were done around around motifs like jafri, itkhati, Latai etc. In these modern times more variation in the designs are being done. The Muslin may have vanished but Satranjis, with help from buyers, now have a better chance of survival.
