An inorganic compound that occurs in nature as the mineral periclase. In aqueous media combines quickly with water to form magnesium hydroxide. It is used as an antacid and mild laxative and has many nonmedicinal uses. It has good thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity at elevated temperatures. It is used for refractory applications, absorbent, catalyst, catalyst support, Magnetron sputtering source, animal feedstuffs, fertilizers, special cements, gas-scrubbing equipment, and a variety of magnesium chemicals. Application: Cattle feed, paper and pulp production, fertilizers, sorelcement and grinding wheels, brakelinings, water purification, slurry treatment, chemical application, sugar refining, rubber and plastic, glass and enamel and metallurgical application.
