The new race pedals have 4 times the the amount of platform area as the previous generation, enabling them to better transfer your effort to the rear wheel. Other design enhancements include a lower profile design which increases ground clearance and a slimmer axle profile and offset bindings which increase the mud shedding capabilities - the previous generation's achilles heal. Bearing placement has been widened to reduce flex and prolong bearing life.
The Shimano PD-M980 XTR Race pedals use a stainless steel axle, bolts, retention springs, and bindings. The body is made from aluminum. The release tension is adjustable and the pedals offer 5 degrees of float. The best has gotten even better with the new Shimano XTR
